Relocation Assistance and Job Hunting
Posted in September 15th, 2009
A lot of Americans are considering job opportunities in other states or cities especially if the local economy is not performing as well as expected due to the global crisis. One aspect of job hunting that you might want to consider is relocation assistance.
Many employers offer such assistance as part of the package but it usually varies depending on the company’s budget and your needs. As you hunt for a job, you can expect this particular employee benefit to be discussed. For this reason, it is crucial that you know what to say.
- Before you attend the meeting, you should make sure that you have prepared a detailed budget for your move. This will help you avoid being caught on the spot if the interviewer asks you about the moving costs.
- You should only negotiate the assistance package once the job has been offered to you.
- During the negotiation, you should be very clear of what type of relocation assistance you will require. This could include moving your belongings, help in renting or selling your old home, budget for the trips you will have to make as you search for a new home and even the expenses you will incur if you need to visit your family in case you needed to start your new job in the middle of the school year.
- Consider asking for an advance on the total amount of your move since majority of the fees will have to be settled immediately after the move and having to wait for the company to reimburse you could ruin your budget.
- Make sure that everything you and the employer agreed on are put into writing to avoid any misunderstanding. You should sign this document before signing the actual employment contract.
- Exert extra effort to save on moving cost like finding bargain deals. This will effectively cut the relocation assistance cost and your employer will thank you for doing so. You will even be considered a team player.
